Smol child always with injuries like black eyes, bleeding nose, footprint-shaped bruises on his arms and stomach, and welts on his cheeks. Basically he gets beaten with fists and feet a lot. He wears dogtags around his neck at all times.
He is deaf and wide-eyed, but never oblivious. Don't take that blank look for stupidity; he knows he's going to die. It's just a matter of when.

BRIEF CANONNicolas was born to West Gate mercenary commander Gaston Brown and a Twilight prostitute. Twilights, or Tagged, are the descendants of super soldiers who are biologically addicted to the serum. They receive small doses of Celebre Uppers and Downers; these both keep them alive and slowly kill them. The government treats them as inhuman, as slaves. In Nic's childhood, they were often whores or soldiers. Each Tagged is born with a defect, and Nic's is his Deafness.
Gaston killed Nic's mother after she gave birth, because "we can't let those things breed." He kept Nic around simply so he wouldn't have to hire a Tagged mercenary; if he lives long enough, he can sell him to the highest bidder.
A rich family hired Gaston's unit to protect them from the Anti-Twilight riots in the streets, and Gaston assigned Nic to the middle bastard child, Wallace. They bonded over their abusive fathers; Wallace taught Nic to write and read, and they both learned some sign language together. They got along until Nic was injured by a rioter, and the wound became infected through neglect. Wallace learned of Nic's condition; he is a Twilight, and he won't live much longer. He shouldn't become attached.
In an effort to keep his one and only friend around him forever, Wallace buys Nic from his father. Gaston easily hands him off and leaves him behind, his last words being, "Don't pretend you're human, monster." As he watches his father's back, Nic's first smile is a broken one, heralding the beginning of his insanity.
Shortly thereafter, Wallace's father smashes a wine bottle across his head, then puts out a cigarette in his eye. Nic kills Wallace's father, then goes on a rampage throughout the manor, killing the wife, two children, and servants. He then puts his broken katana to his own throat. Wallace tackles and strangles him, screaming that he isn't allowed to die until he suffers like Wallace did. Unlike what Nic thought, Wallace did not want Nic to murder his entire family then leave him alone in the world. This is the basis for their unstable friendship in the future.
CANON POINT for memes I flip between right before The Defining Moment of Murder, right after it, and (rarely) when he lived on the streets with young Worick and his newfound prostitution business. Either way, he's broken.
